    Convert function

I was editing Blue Moon (beer) and after saving my edits I noticed (Expression error: Division by zero kJ/L)in bright red when I saved the page. Worried that I had somehow clicked something and done it myself, I looked into this and discovered that something was set wrong initially. I tried a few things with preview to fix it and none of them worked. I then looked around the Help Desk for a bit and couldn't find the Convert function anywhere.

    Editing a location template

With the recent updates to MediaWiki that cause malformed {{coord}} templates to produce errors, our longstanding {{Location map USA Alaska}} template is messed up; according to the display, it's centered at more than 200ºE, which isn't possible because numbers only go up to 180º. Looking at the code, I'm guessing that the map centering is caused by the

    | y = (100*({{{2}}} - 72)/(51 - 72))
    | x = (100*(({{{3}}} + ({{{3}}} < 0)*360) - 172)/((-129 + 360) - 172))

code, but I'm not sure how to change it to work properly. Could you please suggest changes? Note that it's fully protected, but since I'm an admin I'll be able to implement any changes that you can suggest. Nyttend (talk) 04:56, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Fok_it

There is a Finnish newspaper comic strip called Fok_it with an underscore. Now Wikipedia seems to consider spaces and underscores as equal in article titles. If I were to write an article about it, would the title appear as "Fok it"? Would this be a problem? JIP | Talk 05:49, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The page would have to be called "Fok it", but you can change the appearance of the title by adding {{DISPLAYTITLE:Fok_it}} anywhere on the page (preferably at the top). The Anonymouse (talk • contribs) 05:58, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How does the Wikipedia search box determine which articles should be suggested first? Eg. the first suggestion for 'A' is 'Animal'. Till 11:04, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    • My explanation was a bit simplistic, because Anime was more popular over the last 30 days than Animal, but you can see that items are roughly ordered based on popularity: maybe the popularity index used for autosuggest was last updated several months ago. Maybe other criteria are also taken into account: with Google, for example, it seems that autosuggest may also be partially based on your past search history if you are logged in.
    • It seems that the Page Index is updated on a daily basis, so maybe the popularity ordering also varies on a daily basis. HTH (Hope This Helps). LittleBen (talk) 11:45, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In the place you want the link to the footnote to appear (like this:[1]), type the following: <ref>your source</ref>. Then, at the bottom of the page, add a section called "References", and type the following: {{Reflist}}. After you save the page, your source will appear in the References section. -- ypnypn (talk) 17:52, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting a Sandbox article and creating a new Sandbox

Can anyone help advise me on the following difficulty? I created a Sandbox article and then moved it to Wikipedia. Today I wanted to start a new article, went to the Sandbox (or so I thought), did not know how to delete the article that had been moved, and promptly started the new article while leaving the old title in place. Later, to my horror, I discovered that the new draft had somehow replaced the 'live' article that I believed I had moved out of the Sandbox. I've reverted so that the damage is now undone. However, I still have the problem as first stated. How do I delete this article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Kim_Traynor/sandbox so that it no longer appears in my Sandbox; and how do I start a new article in the Sandbox once I've done that? Also, is there any way of deleting the crazy edits from the new draft now appearing on the viewhistory page of the live article? Does the Sandbox space become immediately available as a blank space following deletion? Any advice would be much appreciated, even if it's only to tell me where to look for the proper instructions which I haven;t been able to find yet. Kim Traynor (talk) 18:32, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your confusion came because on moving your sandbox to article space the sandbox was left with a redirect to the article in mainspace. Hence when you went into your sandbox again you began to edit the article in mainspace. i have now replaced the sandbox redirect by just a link, so now you can go into the sandbox and replace it by whatever you want next. - David Biddulph (talk) 18:40, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you find yourself in the same situation again in future, when you get redirected you'll see a note at the top of the article saying that you've got there via a redirect. A blue link there will get you back to the redirect page and let you edit there. See WP:Redirect. - David Biddulph (talk) 18:46, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    That's fantastic, David. Thanks for your very prompt and clear explanation and help in returning the Sandbox back to virgin territory. I'll copy and paste your explanation for future reference. I edit a lot on Wikipedia, but I still don't understand its various mechanisms and am never sure how to look anything up when seeking guidance. I appreciate what you've done for me.     Consider the following hypothetical discussion;

    Is this browser-specific? I don't see a second bullet under any conditions in Firefox 17.0.1.--ukexpat (talk) 21:44, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I cannot see this effect on Fitefox 16.0.2, but strangely, two bullets are there. The difference is that it would not disappear on clicking. However on Google chrome 23.0.1271.95 m, the effect is still there. There is still a couple issues. Haven't been able to add multiple sources. As well as the in the references tab it would only say the ref name instead of the actual citation. Boyd7854 (talk) 04:50, 8 December 2012 (UTC)Boyd7854[reply]
You haven't used any ref tags that I can see. You need to put your references into <ref> </ref> tags and not brackets like [7]. The wikicode will put in the footnote numbers for you. RudolfRed (talk) 05:08, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
To elaborate a little, you need to put all your sources inside ref tags where you want the footnote to go, and then at the end use {{Reflist}} and it will generate the reference list. RudolfRed (talk) 05:15, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It is working better though I'm getting duplicate sources down below.. (not including the references page keeping those for easy copy and paste. when I add figures which looks even more of a pain) Boyd7854 (talk) 06:20, 8 December 2012 (UTC)Boyd7854[reply]

    Problem with (sandbox) relative linking?

I have two subpages below my sand box, /a and /b. I can get to /b from /a by writing {{../b|params..}} but when I try to transclude /a from my sandbox, as {{/a|params..}} it then tries to access b as user/b not user/sandbox/b

Or am I doing something wrong? Alternatively, is there an easy way of removing [ and ] from a string, i.e. "unlinking", which is what I really want to do? John of Cromer in China (talk) mytime= Sat 14:21, wikitime= 06:21, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Subpage links are evaluated in the context of the page being rendered, not the page on which the link was keyed. So you will have to use the full page name when transcluding those subpages, and not use the ".." abbreviation.
I don't know how to remove characters from a string, but I do know that string handling is notoriously inefficient here. I recommend that you undo your changes to the Runway article, and instead create a separate template containing a "#switch" statement that outputs the exact text you want. Then the article text will be easy for other editors to understand, and the template coding will be much simpler as well. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:41, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can anyone advise me how to avoid multiple repeats of the same reference appearing in an article's Reference list? I can see from previous articles I've done that either an automatic bot or a very kind person has employed a method which I've attempted to clone but without success. JWoww's birthday

Hi there. I'm a fan of Jersey Shore, and out of curiosity I was looking up there birthdays on your site. I then came across this video on youtube, which states directly from JWoww herself that she was born in 1985, not 86. Here is the link below to cross refernce. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ee1C5FB3ceo&feature=fvwp — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.76.16.164 (talk) 01:48, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know her but http://jwoww.com/custom/about at her official website says "born on February 27, 1986". Our article JWoww says the same. The person in the Youtube video is drinking and starts by saying "by the time I walk out I'm drunk". At 1m13s she talks about "a Land Before Time dinosaur that came out in 1985 the year I was born". The Land Before Time actually came out in 1988. We should prefer a written statement at the official website over a possibly drunken interview talking about something else and mentioning an alleged birth year in passing while saying another clearly incorrect year. All other sources I have seen also say February 27, 1986. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:12, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    General image questions

    Resolved

I have a some questions relating to image uploads and couldn't find an appropriate help forum, so please refer me elsewhere if this is not the proper place for these questions:

    • Which is preferable for uploading: good-quality, medium-resolution images -or- very-high quality (big files)?
    • Is there a preferred image format for high-quality images?
    • Often, the high-resolution images on WP have smaller versions available; should I create smaller versions, or is that something that is done automatically?

This relates to a high-resolution TIFF (57.3 Meg) that I downloaded from Library of Congress. This image included handy templates for histogram and temperature optimization. From this, I have derived a high-quality image, and can make copies in just about any size or format. - I will inquire elsewhere regarding uploading / copyright, etc. (This 19th C. print image is potentially useful for the article I have been collaborating on - if interested, details from source: http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/2004666374/) ~ Thanks once more for your assistance, and for allowing me to be annoying ;) ~E 74.60.29.141 (talk) 05:22, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Images used in Wikipedia can be uploaded to either Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons. Non-free images should be at Wikipedia and then WP:Image resolution applies. Free images are usually best to upload to Commons, and often transferred to there if the uploader chose Wikipedia. Some relevant links: commons:Commons:Maximum file size, commons:Commons:Why we need high resolution media, commons:Commons:File types#Size and scaling, commons:Commons:File types#TIFF, and commons:Commons:Help desk for asking questions. A page using an image will usually specify the display size and then our software automatically scales it. The file page often has links to different resolutions right below the image and these are also automatically made. Pedro the Spanish Speaking, Singing, Horse Riding Monkey

    • Pedro is a monkey (not a scary one either)
    • Pedro speaks Spanish (it is his native tongue)
    • Pedro can sing (quite well)
    • Pedro knows how to ride a horse (enough said)
Pedro was born on January 1, 1999 in Chihuahua, Mexico (a real place). His parents were two very well known circus performers who traveled many Mexican cities bringing joy to young and old. When Pedro was born (on New Years Day), his parents knew he was going to be special. His first words were (well, very hard for you and I to understand) equivelant to the Spanish word of "Fiesta" or "Party." He knew in his heart that he would one day become the life of the party, any party really, because how many monkeys do you know that learned how to sing and ride a horse? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cf.harding (talkcontribs) 07:05, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your post, however is there a question for the helpdesk? Tiggerjay (talk) 07:31, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The only question I could see: "how many monkeys do you know that learned how to sing and ride a horse?" I'm thinking Mickey Dolenz for starters. John of Cromer in China (talk) mytime= Sun 20:24, wikitime= 12:24, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How to fix problem on main page

I posted about a problem with a quote on the main page in the main page errors. I posted about 4 hours ago. Nothing has happened.

Are main page errors corrected? If not, please don't tell people to post about them, just tell people to ignore them.

Is wikipedia an encyclopedia or what? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.107.131.23 (talk) 07:44, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, I cannot locate the error you reported at Talk:Main_Page. Can you describe the problem you are seeing? Tiggerjay (talk) 07:50, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    [2] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.107.131.23 (talk) 07:51, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As you might have noticed, it was removed 5 minutes ago. It does appear that the main page had some incorrectly synthesized data, but since it is no longer active, I believe the point is moot. Tiggerjay (talk) 08:06, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I just learned that errors on the main page are ignored since there are only there for a few hours. Nice going wikiepdia. It's no wonder the experts don't edit.

However, the article is probably all wrong. The author incorrectly synthesized the information from the one source, attached other information to the source that is not in the article, and did not understand what the reference was saying in the first place. It is not the appropriate reference for this particular article.

I looked at one other reference used by the author in that article, and the little I reviewed is used incorrectly also. The article should probably be deleted.

However, now that I know wikipedia just puts anything into articles whether it is right or wrong and doesn't allow them to be corrected, I assume this information will just stay there and become part of the google wikipedia archive of nonsense. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.107.131.23 (talk) 08:17, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, let me encourage you to edit the article as you see necessary. Just before you do so, please read this quick summary on article development then go and BOLDLY EDIT. The power of wikipedia is that anybody can edit the article and it is community reviewed. Tiggerjay (talk) 08:31, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Where in that does it discuss the problem I am having with that article being on the main page ever and staying in its present state?

I read the first 5 paragraphs, lists of links to other articles. I'm not looking for an article to create, to translate, or otherwise fix; I already found one that needs fixed. I'm not looking to write a featured article on the topic. It is taking me hours to try to get one bad statement off the main page, at six hours a sentence it would take a year to write one featured article. Do you think you'll get any experts to do this? Probably not.

The research section says articles have to be verifiable, but this article is not verifiable and editors kept restoring the unverifiable information.

I don't need to find relevant articles, as this is a major topic. The lede section of the article is completely off target, and most of the article misses the topic, so this part of the page about how to write has nothing to do with the problem.

I can't fix a broken article, but I'm sent to read a page full of inapplicable information that doesn't have to do with fixing articles. Why? Keep the experts away from editing? I think you're doing a good job at that already. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.107.131.23 (talk) 08:41, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Greater involvement by scientists would lead to a "multiplier effect", says Wales. Most entries are edited by enthusiasts, and the addition of a researcher can boost article quality hugely. "Experts can help write specifics in a nuanced way," he says.[1]" They can't if you don't let them. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.107.131.23 (talk) 08:46, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You did right by posting to Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors. Please post errors there another time. As the page history [3] shows, many errors are quickly fixed after being posted there. Thanks for trying to get this problem fixed while it was on the main page. Unfortunately your post wasn't reviewed in time by an administrator (Chris857 is not) with the ability to edit the fully protected Template:Did you know. We are all volunteers and it was Sunday 03:41 (UTC), a time with relatively low activity in the English Wikipedia. The DYK hook was in the article when the hook was verified [4], but was unfortunately edited out [5] before it went on the main page. Shit happens. Many DYK nominations are by the article creator who watches the article carefully. In this case the nomination was by somebody else and it was actually the creator who edited out the DYK hook, probably without knowing it was used in a DYK nomination. I have learned that there is a planned "Transfer of Ownership" that's gonna occur between Nassau Broadcasting Partners and Carlisle Capital Corporation (to be acquired by Vertical Capital Partners) and then ultimately into the hands of the Vermont Broadcast Associates. The bottom line is that the current website for WMOO-FM "Moo 92" is probably gonna be taken down soon and replaced by a brand new website on the same exact URL extension. As this switch happens, probably the Full-Sized PNG of the WMOO-FM "Moo 92" logo will get retired from the Internet. I'm wondering whether the anticipated retirement of the Full-Sized PNG of the WMOO-FM "Moo 92" logo might fall into the category of image grandfathering, in which case it might be okay to use this PNG for this article. Maybe, even, if the WMOO-FM "Moo 92" logo gets changed under the ownership of Vermont Broadcast Associates, this Full-Sized PNG Image might be able to get used as a "Previous Logo" listing within the Wikipedia article for this station. Here's the link to the Full-Sized PNG file for the WMOO-FM "Moo 92" logo. WMOO-FM Full-Sized Logo

I have just uploaded 4 images to go in to the JUBY file but they seem to have gone into a black hole.

Where do they hide them please and how do I get them into the article?

Bernard Juby — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anketil (talkcontribs) 20:42, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Juby coat of arms
    Juby coat of arms
You have uploaded four images to Wikimedia Commons. You can see them, and read their names, here. To include one in the article, you would write something like

[[Image:Alanus de Houby.jpg|120px|right|Juby coat of arms]]

producing this result seen to the right.
I assume that, by "the JUBY file", you mean the article Juby.
I notice that you have written on the article's talk page, "This is a page to allow members of the wider family to post questions or just keep every-one up to date." That is not the purpose of an article's talk page. It is for discussion of issues associated with the Wikipedia article.
Your name "Bernard Juby" and username Anketil imply that you are associated with the subject of the article. You should therefore read Conflict of interest before you do any more work on this article. In any case, the article is likely to be deleted soon, as it includes no verifiable references. Moreover, it is about the surname "Juby". As far as I am aware, Wikipedia does not have articles about surnames. Maproom (talk) 21:19, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you want a copy on your own computer: Click the image in Unter den Linden to get to File:Unter den Linden im Herbst.jpg. Then click "Full resolution" to get to /media/wikipedia/commons/8/87/Unter_den_Linden_im_Herbst.jpg. If you right click the image there then your browser will probably present a menu where you can choose to save the image.
If you want to add the photo to another Wikipedia page, see Wikipedia:Picture tutorial. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:16, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Should Muslim Sect be Shown Next To Religion in Infobox?

There seems to be disagreement over whether or not "Sunni Islam" or "Shia Islam" should be on a Muslim's infobox next to "Religion" or just "Islam". I believe there should be consistency, and there are many Muslim world leaders whose sects are mentioned. There are also many whose sects also aren't mentioned. I don't know where to go for people to discuss this issue where people would respond in less than a year and set a precedent. There are many well known Muslim world leaders with their sects mentioned, including Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan, Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain, Bashar al-Assad of Syria, Ali Khamenei and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran, Nouri al-Maliki of Iraq, Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan, Mahmoud Abbas of Palestine, Emomalii Rahmon of Tajikstan, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Turkey, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia, Abdelkader Taleb Omar of partially recognized Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Former President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, Najib Razak of Malaysia, Hamadi Jebali of Tunisia, Mohammed Magariaf and Ali Zeidan of Libya, Abdullah II of Jordan, Almazbek Atambayev of Kyrgyzstan, Najib Mikati of Lebanon, Yahya Jammeh of Gambia, and Former Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.

    So that's my position on this.--Xxhopingtearsxx (talk) 02:28, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You should first read the conflict of interest guideline and the frequently-asked questions for companies. As you belong to the organisation in question, you should not be the person to create an article about it. Instead, consider listing WSAfrica at Requested articles, so that another editor can create the page for you. Bear in mind that if the company does not meet the inclusion criteria for businesses it is unlikely to be created (and will be quickly deleted if it is). I am just wondering what the policies for a second account are, the reason i ask is last night i was on my tablet just reading up on some edits from this account and i nearly accidently due to problem with the tablet done a rollback on admin board, i rather make a second account that has no powers i have on this account so i can still observe and comment on talk pages from my tablet without the worry of doing something bad with this account which does have powers, powers of which i do not want to abuse or accidentally use, but i obviously want to link it to my main account and obviously make it know that that account is only there to allow me to edit from my tablet but is related to this account and any problems or so on should be brought to this accountAndrewcrawford (talk - contrib) 13:01, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am system administrator and I use Wikipedia to get an overview of a new software because it always gives me information in the same way. And Wikipedia does usually have this information. Once (2-3 years ago) I discovered a great virtualization solution and tried to find a related article in Wikipedia about it and was surprised - it had been deleted in English Wikipedia as non-notable.

Three years later this software became mature and widely used. I went to Wikipedia and found out that still there is no article in English Wikipedia about that software. I decided to translate this article from Russian and created a page again (it was my first article in Wikipedia ever). One or two month later it was again deleted as non-notable. A lot of Linux administrators over the world know this application and use it for a long time already but I haven't even managed to prove its notability.

How can I save this article from deletion? Why is it so difficult to create an article about popular and widely used software? Is it going to be easier someday? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.66.10.152 (talk) 14:07, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The most recent deletion discussion was at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Proxmox Virtual Environment. An article will be saved from deletion if there are multiple references to independent reliable sources which demonstrate the subject's notability. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:33, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
