Shiulie Ghosh (Bengali: শুইলিই ঘোষ[pronunciation?], born 28 September 1968) is a television journalist for Al Jazeera English, a leading international news network headquartered in Doha, Qatar.[1][2][3] She attended The Avenue Primary School, Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough, and then Teesside High.

She obtained a degree in Law from the University of Kent before joining Radio Cleveland as a Programme Assistant. In 1990 she was accepted as BBC News Trainee and worked in various posts at the BBC before joining the ITV News in 1998. In 2001 she was named Best Television News Journalist at the British Telecom Ethnic Multicultural Media Awards (EMMA).

In July 2006, it was announced that Ghosh was to leave ITV News to join al-Jazeera's much-delayed English-language service, Al Jazeera English.[4]

Ghosh is a senior anchor for Al Jazeera English, and was the opening anchor on the channel's launch in Doha on 15 November 2006. She also hosted Every Woman, a show focusing on women's issues from around the world for which she won the Editor's Choice Media Excellence Award from the Association of International Broadcasting. Ghosh was featured in Qatar's winning 2022 FIFA World cup bid presentation video.

Personal life

Ghosh is married to Simon Torkington, a former BBC News editor, and the mother of a daughter, Maya.

In 2006, a spoof film was made by Simon's colleagues as a tribute to him, because he was embarking on a new life in Qatar with Shiulie, who was referred to in much of the video. The film caused controversy at the BBC, with some claiming BBC licence payer's money was being abused.[5]

Ghosh is a Patron of the charity Build Africa.
