He was born in Stollberg.

At the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow he won a silver medal in the 67.5 kg class. He won gold at the 1981 and 1983 World Championships.[1] At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul he won a gold medal in the 67.5 kg class.

As of 2008, Kunz is head of German instant soup manufacturer Suppina.[2][1]
