Mut'a is a temporary marriage which is by islamic law a marriage with a preset duration. Because of this, in western eyes it can be considered a kind of prostitution. Sunni muslims believe Muhammad initially allowed, but later abolished this type of marriage, while it is institutionalized in Shia islam.
