VASP Flight 780 was a cargo flight from Rio Grande to Cruzeiro do Sul that crashed on 22 June 1992, killing all three occupants.
Aircraft and crew
The aircraft involved was a Boeing 737-2A1C, that first flew on 22 December 1975. It was delivered to VASP in January 1976 and was powered by two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-17 turbofan engines.
The captain had logged 4,581 flight hours, including 3,081 hours on the Boeing 737. The first officer had 2,437 flight hours, but only 337 of them were on the Boeing 737.[1]
Accident
After the flight was cleared to land on runway 10, the fire alarm for the cargo compartment sounded intermittently. Distracted by the alarms, the pilots steered the plane off course. At around 6:05 a.m. local time the aircraft crashed into the jungle.
