Danilo Souza Cavalcante[a] (born July 3, 1989)[1] (also erroneously referred to as "Danelo" Souza Cavalcante), is a Brazilian national accused of murder in the Brazilian state of Tocantins and convicted of murder in the US state of Pennsylvania. He escaped from the Chester County Prison on August 31, 2023, and was apprehended on September 13, 2023 after a 14-day manhunt by police.[2]

Born in Maranhão,[3] Danilo fled to the United States after Brazilian authorities issued a warrant for his arrest in Tocantins in 2017 in connection with the shooting death of a student.[4][5] In the United States, he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for yet another murder, the stabbing of his ex-girlfriend in April 2021.[6] He escaped from imprisonment in Chester County Prison in Pocopson Township on August 31, 2023 after crab walking upward between two walls and pushing through razor wire.[7] Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens, from the region of Chester County, said on September 8 that there were 400 local, state and federal agents searching for Cavalcante in a wooded patch in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. According to the police, Cavalcante has experience hiding in the bush, a technique he used to elude Brazilian authorities.[7]

On September 11, he was placed on the Interpol red list.[7] North American authorities were offering a reward of $25,000 for information on Danilo's whereabouts.[8] Danilo was apprehended by Pennsylvania State Police on the morning of September 13, 2023 in South Coventry after a dog spotted him wearing a Philadelphia Eagles hooded sweatshirt crawling in the bushes. He had been hiding under a large pile of chopped wood. A Pennsylvania State Trooper K9 bit him on his head, causing him to yell in pain and bleed. While Cavalcante recovers from his head injuries, he will be transferred by SWAT to PSP's Avondale barracks before he will be sent 50 miles away to SCI Phoenix in Skippack Township.[9]

Overview

Murder in Tocantins

On November 5, 2017, Danilo shot and killed the student Walter Júnior in the city of Figueirópolis (TO). Investigations indicated that they were friends, and the murder allegedly occurred due to a debt that Walter owed him. One week after the crime, the Brazilian justice system accepted a request for preventive detention made by the Public Prosecutor's Office, issuing a warrant for the criminal. Danilo, in turn, became a fugitive and traveled to the United States in January 2018.[10] Although there was an arrest warrant against him, Cavalcante left the country through Brasília International Airport because the Tocantins justice system had not yet requested the registration of the decision in the National Warrant Registry, which only occurred seven months after the crime, in June 2018.[10]

Murder of ex-girlfriend in the United States

In the United States, he began a relationship with Deborah Brandão, also a Brazilian. According to investigations, Danilo did not accept the end of the relationship and had been threatening the victim since 2020.[11] On April 8, 2021, Deborah was in front of her house with her two children, then aged 4 and 7, when Danilo attacked her and stabbed her 38 times, leading to her death. He was arrested immediately after the crime and later sentenced to life imprisonment.[12]

Prison escape

He escaped from the Chester County Prison where he was incarcerated in Pocopson Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania on August 31, 2023, by scaling walls.[7] Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens from the Chester County region stated on September 8 that there were 400 local, state, and federal agents searching for Cavalcante in a wooded area in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. According to the police, the Brazilian has experience in hiding in the woods, as he did following the 2017 homicide.[7][13]

On September 11, he was placed on the Interpol's red list.[7] U.S. authorities initially offered a $20,000 reward for information about Danilo's whereabouts,[14] which was increased to $25,000 on September 11.[15] On the evening of September 12, footprints identical to those of prison shoes worn by Cavalcante were found in mud along Pennsylvania Route 100 in South Coventry Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, and more than 500 police officers were sent to search and secure the perimeter. Multiple searches during the night have taken place by the FBI and National Guard.[16] Following his actions, his sister was arrested by ICE for "immigration issues".[17]

Capture

On September 13, state authorities announced he had been taken into custody.[18] He was captured in a forested area in South Coventry, also in Chester County, about 25–30 miles away.[clarification needed]
