- Egyptian presidential election: Authorities report President Hosni Mubarak has won 88.6% in the country's first multi-party vote, with a generally low turnout.
- Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko dismisses his cabinet, including Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, amid accusations of corruption.
- Hurricane Katrina: Accusations of mismanagement lead to the removal of FEMA chairman Michael D. Brown from command. The confirmed death toll is in excess of 600, and is expected to rise.
