Suggestions

List new suggestions here, under the date the article was created or expanded (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. If there's a suitable image, place it after the suggestion. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion. Also, self-nominations are permitted and encouraged.

Remember:

  • Proposed articles should be over 1,500 characters in main body text (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables), cite sources (these sources should be properly labelled, that is, not under an "External links" header), be no more than five days old (unless it was under 1,500 characters, and has been expanded fivefold or more within the last five days), and should not be marked as stubs. Articles with good references and citations are preferred to those without.
  • To count the number of characters in a piece of text, you will need to use an external software program that has a character-counting feature. For example, if you are using Microsoft Word, select the text from the article page (or, in the case of "Did you know" nominations, this Talk page) – not the edit page containing Wikitext – then copy and paste it into a blank document. Click "Tools", then "Word Count", and note the "Characters (with spaces)" figure. Other word processing programs may have a similar feature.
  • Suggested facts should be:
    • Interesting to draw in a variety of readers around the world.
    • Short and pithy (under about 200 characters).
    • Neutral.
    • Definite facts, mentioned in the article.
  • Suggested pictures should be:
    • Suitably freely (PD, GFDL, CC etc) licensed (NOT fair use) as the main page by policy can only have freely-licensed pictures.
    • Attractive and interesting, even at a very small (100px-wide) resolution.
    • Already in the article.
    • Relevant to the article.
  • Proposed lists should have two things to be considered for DYK: (i) be a compilation of entries that are unlikely to have ever been compiled anywhere else (e.g. List of architectural vaults) and (ii) have non-stub text that brings out interesting relational facts from the compiled list that may not otherwise be obvious but for the compilation.
  • Please check back for comments on your nomination. Your entry may miss out on the front page if you don't respond to reasonable objections.

As I understand, that wasn't so uncommon back then. Alekjds talk 02:19, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Changed. Thanks. -- P.K.Niyogi 09:52, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • ...that the first meeting between the Texas Longhorns and Ohio State Buckeyes college football teams came only after the programs had played a combined 1,594 games and that it helped determine who would play for the national championship? (self nom - pictured) Johntex\talk 09:10, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Article currently listed at AfD. The deletion nomination there is precisely the question I would ask about this one: Given that there are thousands of football-playing universities in the USA and that most teams (AFAIK) have a fair amount of leeway over their scheduling (as against professional teams), why is this fact significant? BigHaz - Schreit mich an 12:56, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • Teams actually do not have much leeway on scheduling opponents. Most of the season is committed to the conference schedule, where the smae opponents are played over-and-over. Most teams also have traditional non-conference opponents that they routinely schedule (USC vs Notre Dame) or (Texas vs Rice). Then the top teams usually want to add games they know they can win. As explained in the article and now on AfD, it is significant because it is the second most games ever played by two college football teams prior to them facing each other. Also, it was a rarity for two top-5 teams to meet so early in the season. As the photo to the right shows, it was rare enough to cause spontaneous celebrations in the streets of Austin, a 1,000 miles away from the game. There are numerous citations for it being one of the top games of the year, and one of the two teams went on to win the national championship. Johntex\talk 22:00, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
        • In that case, it may be worthwhile altering the hook to explain one or more of those points of significance (second most games played before meeting, rarity of an early meeting, spontaneous celebrations a long way away), since the lay reader will want something more than just the bare bones here. BigHaz - Schreit mich an 22:05, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
          • I'd be happy to alter the hook, but I think it may be a moot point. I believe articles at AfD are inelligible for DYK aren't they? If that is the case, then unless the AfD is withdrawn early then I guess this won't fly for DYK.

the article says barricade too, but isn't barracks meant? Johnbod 22:53, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No, I meant barricade. Actually, literal barricades were erected surrounding The Armory, so perhaps it needs a slight rewrite. Peter G Werner 04:17, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • ...that the company Mind Dynamics, a leader of the Human Potential Movement, engaged in coercive persuasion to force its subjects to face their fears? expanded form stub by User:Smee, nom by howcheng {chat} 17:47, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Inappropriate for DYK. Not neutral and part of a long-term push to discredit EST using this project. And if you doubt that then just review the contrib history of User:Smee, a clear WP:SPA. This is not a personal attack, this is fact for any editor to verify for themselves [2]. --Justanother 17:53, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • (Copied and edited from User talk:Howcheng) Hi. I removed the Mind Dynamics from the next update. I was quite surprised to see that you had elevated it over my objection and with no input from other editors than Smee. I objected to this as not neutral and another editor has tagged the article as unbalanced - IMO, this is NOT DYK material. And I object to the DYK, a nice little fun feature, being used for POV-pushing. [. . .] I do not object to [Smee's] work being featured in DYK, I object to biased articles and statements being featured. If Smee submits a non-biased suggestion fron a non-biased article then great! --Justanother 13:04, 14 April 2007 (UTC) (edited 14:16, 14 April 2007 (UTC))[reply]
      • Please see above DYK Admins, and please actually check out the article for yourself, as well as the Admin that created the nom hook suggestion. Every single fact and sentence within the article is backed up by (33) multiple highly reputable secondary sourced citations. I worked painstakingly in this particular case to make sure of that. Smee 18:07, 14 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]
        • Well, since you consented to leave the tags up on the page, it's not fit for Main Page display now. howcheng {chat} 00:57, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
          • So anyone can slap tags on a page and that makes that page unfit for DYK, no matter how many citations from reputable secondary sources there are? That does not seem logical. Smee 02:44, 15 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]
            • Not necessarily, but these issues need to be resolved before the article's appearance on the Main Page. howcheng {chat} 05:59, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
              • I do not understand. Again, I have worked painstakingly to back up everything in the article to the (33) reputable secondary sourced citations. No other users have volunteered information from other reputable secondary sources. This seems silly at this point for it not to be a DYK candidate, especially with a nom from a different editor other the creator. Smee 06:23, 15 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]
                • Citing sources does not necessarily make an article NPOV. Sources can always be selected or interpreted in a POV fashion and the sources themselves can also be POV. As long as there is a dispute like this the entry shouldn't be used IMHO, especially as long as that tag is on the article. The should, however, be used one or two days after expiration if that's necessary for the dispute to be taken care of.--Carabinieri 12:43, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great work expanding the article, but unfortunately I don't think it meets the DYK criteria. Seven days ago, the article was already 12.4 KB long[3], and it's currently 43.1 KB. | Pat 14:06, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
