Shortly after she received her PhD, Thomas began working at the University of Texas at Austin in 2014 as a postdoctoral fellow. In 2019 she began her work at UT Austin as a Research Associate. As of 2023, Thomas is an Assistant Professor at UT Austin. Her research studies [[Quantum chromodynamics|Quantum Chromodynamics]] (QCD), the theory of strong interactions in the Standard Model of particle physics. She also studies [[Quark–gluon plasma|Quark-Gluon Plasma]] (QGP), a hot and dense QCD matter, that is produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Unlike in ordinary matter, quarks and gluons are not confined within short distances but can roam freely over distances larger than the hadronic scale in the state of QGP. Understanding this novel state of matter offers a new way to learn how quarks and gluons bind to form stable particles like the proton. Her research group uses special probes, such as heavy quarks (charm and beauty), to study the properties of QGP. The opera was commissioned by [[Heritage Opera]], and the world premiere performance was at [[Boughton House]] in [[Northamptonshire]] on July 30, 2011. The opera is scored for four handed piano (two pianists playing one piano) and was accompanied by Paul Greenhalgh and Jonathan Ellis, under the musical direction of Chris Gill. The world premiere tour comprised mainly heritage venues in the northwest of England, and one performance at the [[Arcola Theatre]] in Dalston, East London, as part of the [[Grimeborn|Grimeborn Festival]].<ref name=EveningStandard/> [[Royal Academy of Music|Royal Academy]] Opera gave two performances of the opera in May 2012,<ref>Morrison, Richard. In 2015 the opera received its American premiere in Baltimore, Maryland. It was performed by the [[Peabody Institute|Peabody Conservatory of Music]] at the local Theatre Project of Baltimore. Eileen Cornett served as music director, with Mark Streshinsky as artistic director. Johanna Kvam and Hanna Shin performed the score for four hands piano. The Southern California premiere was made in June 2018 by Opera UCLA, directed by [[Peter Kazaras]].

The opera was given its Australian premiere in April 2016 by Sydney-based independent opera company, Operantics.

The University of Texas Butler Opera Center will present this work in December 2019. Margaret Jumonville, director, and Yoona Jeong, conductor.

The [[University of Toronto]] Opera School will present the Canadian premiere of this work in March 2020. [[Tim Albery]], director, and Sandra Horst, conductor.

A new production of the orchestral version of Mansfield Park will be performed at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester in Spring 2020 conducted by Nicholas Kok and directed by Stephen Barlow.
